Nado’s Notions: Week 14

Season record: 33-28-2

Last week: 1-4 (Army -10, Kentucky +9.5, Duke -6.5, Arkansas +9.5, Utah -17.5)

It was another ugly week as Duke was the only winner. As the regular season comes to an end, it is one more chance to bounce back. Let’s keep the faith!

Iowa Hawkeyes (7-4) @ Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-4) | November 28 | 11:00 AM CT | Memorial Stadium

Once again, Iowa has one of the best defenses in the country. The Hawkeyes allow only 267.9 yards per game, which ranks eighth in the country. This week, they will face Nebraska and backup quarterback TJ Lateef.

After a promising first start against UCLA, Lateef came back down to Earth against Penn State. Lateef threw for 187 yards on 21-of-37 passing with no touchdowns.

The Iowa offense is not much to brag about, either. However, the Hawkeyes do a decent job on the ground. Iowa is fifth in the Big Ten averaging 174.6 rushing yards per game. Running back Kamari Moulton leads the way, averaging 5.0 yards per carry on the season.

The Nebraska defense has struggled against the run all season. The Cornhuskers rank 115th in the country in yards per carry allowed, at 4.82.

Give me Iowa -6.5.

Georgia is looking like Georgia again. Since their close call against Florida, the Bulldogs beat Mississippi State and Texas by 20 and 25 points, respectively. They followed that up by taking care of Charlotte. Now, they meet their in-state rivals whom they went to eight overtimes with a season ago.

The Georgia offense is very steady behind quarterback Gunner Stockton. The steady Stockton has completed 71.4% of his passes with 19 going for touchdowns and only 4 interceptions.

He also has an ability to run, with 361 yards on the ground this season.

The Georgia Tech defense has been downright bad lately. The Yellow Jackets are allowing 510.7 yards per game in the month of November. That mark ranks 132nd in FBS.

While the Georgia Tech offense has produced all season, they will meet their biggest test of the season in Georgia. The Bulldogs allow 294.5 yards per game, which is good for 14th in the country.

I am going with Georgia -13.5.

UCF Knights (5-6) @ #11 BYU Cougars (10-1) | November 29 | 12:00 PM CT | Lavell Edwards Stadium

I can only imagine the last thing UCF wants to do in the last week of the season is to go to Provo, Utah. The Knights have lost three of their last four. The only win was a 17-14 win over an Oklahoma State team that fired their coach three games into the season.

Meanwhile, BYU is looking at a potential Big 12 Championship and CFP berth. While the Cougars do not need style points, their rushing attack should do the job this week. BYU averages 201.5 rushing yards per game, which should wear down the Knights as their season comes to a close.

BYU -17.5 is the pick.

I said I would not do it, but in the final week of the regular season; I can no longer hold anything back.

Yes, I saw LSU struggle to a 13-10 win over Western Kentucky. However, I am not sure you can lay 10 points when the Oklahoma offense is not much better. On the season, Oklahoma averages 350.1 yards per game, while LSU averages 344.9.

The Oklahoma defense gets its flowers regularly as it has helped guide the Sooners to a 9-2 record. It was also a catalyst when Oklahoma knocked off Alabama in Tuscaloosa, but the Sooners allowed 406 yards that day. LSU held that same Alabama offense to 344 yards, but did not get the victory.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was one of the most highly-touted transfers after coming in from Washington State. However, his production in conference play has been subpar. In seven SEC games, Mateer has only thrown for five touchdowns.

The LSU passing defense will be a big test for Mateer and the Oklahoma offense. In SEC play, the Tigers have allowed only six passing touchdowns and picked off eleven passes. Both marks lead the league.

LSU +10 is the pick as I put on my purple and gold glasses.
