SEC Hot Seats 2025: Week 10

Last time we ran SEC Hot Seats, Billy Napier and Brian Kelly were employed at Florida and LSU, respectively. The latter will be our focus this week.

When Brian Kelly was hired, the goal was national championships. After a little over three and a half seasons at the helm in Baton Rouge, Kelly fell well short of that mission. The 2025 season began with promise as LSU went to Clemson and beat then-ranked #4 Clemson. Ironically enough, this was the only season opener the Tigers won in Kelly’s tenure.

The murmurs started to grow after a poor offensive performance against Florida. Despite five interceptions, LSU only managed to score 20 points in the win. This led to an angry Kelly scolding a reporter in his press conference.

This outburst was a sign of things to come as the offense was never able to get on track in road losses at Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. In his time at LSU, Kelly lost twice in Oxford in two appearances and became the first LSU coach to lose to Vanderbilt since Mike Archer did in 1990.

The biggest unraveling came in the second half of Saturday’s game against Texas A&M. After going into halftime with an 18-14 lead, the Tigers were outscored 35-7 in the second half. That led to an embarrassing sight inside of legendary Tiger Stadium, the Texas A&M team and fans cheering while dejected LSU fans poured out.

This left fans wondering if this was a low point for LSU Football.

The aftermath was enough for the powers that be to fire Kelly the following day.

LSU will now work to pay Kelly’s substantial buyout as the school searches for his successor. While schools like Penn State and Florida have openings, LSU is viewed as the top vacancy.

Time to embrace the chaos of college football!
