Nado’s Notions: Week 2

Season record: 0-4

Last week: 0-4 (TCU -9, Florida International +21.5, Houston -2.5, Wyoming +6.5)

It was a rough way to start the season as I went 0-4. Week 1 can be tough and while TCU and Florida International narrowly missed covering, Houston and Wyoming were massive losses.

Now, I will try to put that behind me with a new week. There is a lot of football left to be played!

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN – AUGUST 31: Will Johnson #2 of the Michigan Wolverines runs with the ball after getting an interception during the second half of a college football game against the Fresno St. Bulldogs at Michigan Stadium on August 31, 2024 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. #3 Texas Longhorns (1-0) @ #10 Michigan Wolverines (1-0) | September 7 | 11:00 AM CT | Michigan Stadium

Line: Texas -7.5 | Total: 42.5

Michigan was not overly impressive in Sherrone Moore’s head coaching debut. The Wolverines held off Fresno State by a score of 30-10, which was capped by cornerback Will Johnson’s pick-six. Meanwhile, everything went right for Texas in their opener against Colorado State. The Longhorns throttled the Rams by a score of 52-0.

The Michigan offense is still looking for answers at quarterback as JJ McCarthy has moved on. Davis Warren took most of the snaps and threw for a pedestrian 118 yards with a touchdown and interception. Alex Orji also threw two passes and added 32 yards on the ground.

Michigan remains a team built around their running game and defense. While they may have taken a step back, the Wolverines are still the defending champions. If they are getting points at home, I am going to take them.

Michigan +7.5 is the pick.

WEST POINT, NEW YORK – AUGUST 30: Kanye Udoh #6 of the Army Black Knights runs for a short gain against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Michie Stadium on August 30, 2024 in West Point, New York. (Photo by Edward Diller/Getty Images)

Army Black Knights (1-0) @ Florida Atlantic Owls (0-1) | September 7 | 11:00 AM CT | FAU Stadium

Line: Florida Atlantic -4 | Total: 42.5

If there is thing I do here on Nado’s Nations, it is respect the troops. You can usually expect a good effort out of Army. The Black Knights pummeled Lehigh in their opener, rushing for 375 yards.

Florida Atlantic had a poor offensive showing against Michigan State. The Owls had a measly 3.44 yards per play last week.

In what could be a battle of grit, I will take Army +4.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA – AUGUST 31: Anthony Colandrea #10 of the Virginia Cavaliers rushes past Wayne Galloway #9 and Camden Byrd #96 of the Richmond Spiders in the second half during a game at Scott Stadium on August 31, 2024 in Charlottesville, Virginia. (Photo by Ryan M. Kelly/Getty Images)

Virginia Cavaliers (1-0) @ Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-0) | September 7 | 6:00 PM CT | Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium

Line: Wake Forest -2.5 | Total: 56.5

Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea put together one of his finest performances as a Cavalier last week against Richmond. Colandrea completed 17 of 23 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. It is also noteworthy that he had no turnovers. Last year, Colandrea struggled in that department with nine interceptions in 2023.

Watch out Wake Forest, the new and improved Anthony Colandrea has arrived.

Virginia +2.5 is my pick.

NORMAN, OKLAHOMA – AUGUST 30: Wide receiver Jalil Farooq #3 of the Oklahoma Sooners takes a pass up the sideline for a 47-yard gain against cornerback Elijah Deravil #4 of the Temple Owls in the first quarter at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on August 30, 2024 in Norman, Oklahoma. Oklahoma won 51-3. (Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Images)

Houston Cougars (0-1) @ #15 Oklahoma Sooners (1-0) | September 7 | 6:45 PM CT | Memorial Stadium

Line: Oklahoma -29 | Total: 49.5

Houston was one of the worst teams I saw this weekend. The Cougars gave up six sacks as they never got into any sort of offensive rhythm. That is bad news as they now go to Oklahoma, who had six sacks of their own in their win over Temple.

Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold only threw for 141 yards, but he was quite efficient. Arnold tossed four touchdowns in their 51-3 win.

This figures to be another rout for the Sooners. I am going with Oklahoma -29.

TEMPE, AZ – AUGUST 31: Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt (10) looks downfield during the college football game between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Arizona State Sun Devils on August 31, 2024 at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-0) @ Arizona State Sun Devils (1-0) | September 7 | 9:30 PM CT | Mountain America Stadium

Line: Arizona State -6.5 | Total: 59.5

Both Arizona State and Mississippi State feature transfer quarterbacks. Both were impressive in their debuts with their respective schools as well. For Arizona State, Sam Leavitt threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns and for Mississippi State, Blake Shapen had 247 yards and three touchdowns.

While #Pac12AfterDark is a thing of the past, this game could have that vibe. You have two really good offensive minds in Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham and Mississippi State’s Jeff Lebby, and both coaching in this game should get us a shootout in the desert late.

Over 59.5 is my pick.
