Nado’s Notions: Week 9

Season record: 20-14-1

Last week: 3-2 (Notre Dame -20.5, Oklahoma State/Texas over 58.5, Ohio State -12, Arkansas +12.5, Florida/Missouri over 61.5)

It was another solid week. Thank goodness for Arkansas coming through with a backdoor cover and Ohio State holding off a Penn State backdoor cover.

Let’s keep rolling!

MORGANTOWN, WV – OCTOBER 31: West Virginia Mountaineers running back Alec Sinkfield (20) carries the football during the second quarter of the college football game between the Kansas State Wildcats and the West Virginia Mountaineers on October 31, 2020, at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, WV. West Virginia Mountaineers (4-2) @ #22 Texas Longhorns (4-2) | November 7 | 11:00 AM CT | Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium

Line: Texas -6.5 | Total: 55

West Virginia has a defense that ranks fourth nationally, allowing only 256 yards per game. I expect this unit to keep this game close and even possibly win against Texas. The Longhorns are coming off of a big overtime win over Oklahoma State. Texas won despite being outgained in yards, 530 to 287.

West Virginia +6.5 is my pick.

IOWA CITY, IOWA- OCTOBER 31: Head coach Pat Fitzgerald of the Northwestern Wildcats celebrates a touchdown in the second half against the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium on October 31, 2020 in Iowa City, Iowa. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images)

Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-1) @ Northwestern Wildcats (2-0) | November 7 | 11:00 AM CT | Ryan Field

Line: Northwestern -4 | Total: 55

Is Northwestern good?

That appears to be the case after two weeks of play. The Wildcats shellacked Maryland 43-3 then went on the road and defeated Iowa 21-20. Now, they host Nebraska at 11:00 AM.

The Cornhuskers have not played since their loss to Ohio State on October 24. While losing to Ohio State is nothing to be ashamed of, I wonder how ready Nebraska will be after an impromptu bye week.

Give me Northwestern -4.

#5 Georgia Bulldogs (4-1) vs. #8 Florida Gators (3-1) | November 7 | 2:30 PM CT | TIAA Bank Field

Line: Georgia -3 | Total: 52.5

The Florida defense put together its best defensive effort of the season against Missouri. The Gators held them to only 248 yards of offense.

Meanwhile, the Georgia offense has issues of its own. After being held scoreless by Alabama in the second half, Kentucky held the Bulldogs to only 14 points. Quarterback Stetson Bennett has struggled. Bennett completed 9 of 14 passes for 131 yards with 2 interceptions.

Passing the ball has not been an issue for Florida. Florida quarterback Kyle Trask has thrown for 18 touchdowns in only 4 games.

While the Georgia defense is a significant test, they will be without one of their best players in safety Richard LeCounte.

LeCounte is an irreplaceable piece of the Georgia secondary.

I am taking Florida +3.

PITTSBURGH, PA – OCTOBER 24: Head Coach Pat Narduzzi of the Pittsburgh Panthers leads his team out onto the field before the game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Heinz Field on October 24, 2020 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin Berl/Getty Images)

Pittsburgh Panthers (3-4) @ Florida State Seminoles (2-4) | November 7 | 3:00 PM CT | Doak Campbell Stadium

Line: Florida State -2 | Total: 51

Pittsburgh is one of those teams that are hard to figure out, but I think I have the Panthers figured out. They are not good, but they are not as bad as they appear, either. The Panthers have lost four in a row. The latest was a 45-3 beatdown at the hands of Notre Dame.

The Panthers offense has been unable to overcome the loss of quarterback Kenny Pickett. In his absence, Joey Yellen is only completing 44% of his passes. Yellen threw three interceptions in the loss to Notre Dame. He is expected to get the start again this week.

Pittsburgh will also need improvement in the running game. Leading rusher Vincent Davis only averages 2.9 yards per carry. However, this is the week to do it as Florida State allows 5.6 yards per carry.

Pittsburgh +2 is my pick.

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – OCTOBER 31: Feleipe Franks #13 of the Arkansas Razorbacks drops back to pass in the second quarter against the Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field on October 31, 2020 in College Station, Texas. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images)

Tennessee Volunteers (2-3) @ Arkansas Razorbacks (2-3) | November 7 | 6:30 PM CT | Razorback Stadium

Line: Tennessee -1.5 | Total: 52.5

Arkansas quarterback Feleipe Franks is playing the best ball of his career. Through five games, Franks is completing 66% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

The same cannot be said for Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano. Guarantano threw two touchdowns against Alabama, but it was not nearly enough in a 48-17 loss. The week before Guarantano threw for only 88 yards against Kentucky and was picked off twice.

Arkansas is slightly better on a per-play average. The Razorbacks average 5.13 yards per play, while Tennessee averages 4.88 yards per play.

Feleipe Franks is 2-0 against Tennessee. He defeated the Volunteers twice as the quarterback of the Florida Gators. I like chances to make it 3-0, so I am taking Arkansas +1.5.
