The city of Atlanta hosts Super Bowl LIII this Sunday. While the city is not synonymous with championships (who cares about soccer?), it is home to some of the most prominent hip hop artists around. With all due respect to T.I., Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, and Waka Flocka, this is an exclusive list and they did not make the cut.
Just to be clear, I am not an expert in the field of rap music. However, I have seen less knowledgeable people cover subjects that they know little about. For example, Britt McHenry is still trying her hand at politics. So allow me to introduce my top five Atlanta rappers.
5. Gucci Mane

Gucci Mane checks in with the fifth spot. He came onto the scene with “Icy” and has stuck around to give us some all-time collaborations. Gucci Mane was featured on Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles”, which reached #1 in the Hot 100 in 2016. Gucci Mane has put his legal battles behind and continues to get the bag.
4. OutKast

This list would not be complete without OutKast. ATLiens is a classic, but Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is more my speed as a millennial. Not sure what they are currently up to, but I would imagine that they are still cooler than cool, much like the weather in Atlanta this week.
3. 21 Savage

21 Savage only has two awards to his name so far in his career. He was featured on Post Malone’s “Rockstar”, which won Billboard Music Awards’ Top Rap Song and MTV Video Music Awards’ Song of the Year. In 2018, 21 Savage released I Am > I Was which has elevated his status. How many awards should it win? Let’s just say, A Lot.
2. Migos

The trio of Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset might be the most popular trio since the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. Their verses may not resonate with Christians the way that bible verses do, but that will not stop their drip. Migos continues to put out hit after hit. Their rise to the top of the rap music game has come quickly, just like their ability to say Versace repeatedly.
1. Young Jeezy

The top spot among Atlanta rappers belongs to none other than “The Snowman” himself, Young Jeezy. His second album was titled The Inspiration and he has provided just that to many people, one of them being ESPN’s Jay Bilas. Each day Bilas begins his day by tweeting a Young Jeezy lyric. With Atlanta hosting Super Bowl LIII, there is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Trap or Die will ‘Put On’ for his city. He is your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper and that is another reason that Young Jeezy is in the top spot.
I already know some of you are thinking I forgot about Future. I really wanted to include him, but I do not think I can forgive him for his verse on Taylor Swift’s End Game. Future has had a remarkable career, but getting outdone by Ed Sheeran does not sit well with me.
I did not come here to argue, so with that said, I’m…
