Week 12 College Football Picks

Season record: 33-30-1

Last week: (West Virginia -11.5, Missouri -16.5, Duke -10, Oklahoma State +20.5, Colorado +6, Georgia -14)

Ho hum…another average week. I remain over .500 for the year, but I am still searching for a perfect week. Anyway, time take a look back.

TCU took an early 3-0 lead. After that, it was all West Virginia as they cruised to a 47-10 victory.

On the day, the Mountaineers outgained the Horned Frogs 535 to 222 in yardage.

Missouri got a hard-fought win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. The Tigers overcame a 21-13 halftime deficit and then had to hang on to get the 33-28 victory.

Missouri had a balanced day offensively as they had 253 yards rushing and 253 yards passing. Quarterback Drew Lock had two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions.

Missouri became bowl eligible with the win, but fell short of covering the 16.5-point spread.

This game was an offensive battle in the first half that came to a screeching halt in the second half. Duke led 35-28 at halftime as the teams raced back and forth down the field. However, in the second half, the teams combined to score only 14 points. North Carolina’s score came with 1:15 left in the game to make it 42-35.

The garbage time score meant that North Carolina failed to cover the 10-point spread.

Duke quarterback Daniel Jones had himself quite a game as he threw for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns, and ran for 186 yards and a touchdown.

This game lived up to its name as it delivered bedlam. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State combined for 1342 yards as Oklahoma defeated Oklahoma State, 48-47. The Sooners narrowly escaped when the Cowboys’ two-point conversion was unsuccessful with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma State easily covered as the 20-point underdog as they kept pace with Oklahoma.

I would post some of the stats, but I am afraid they are unsafe for work.

Colorado took an early 7-0 lead, but that was it. Washington State came back and turned in a dominant 31-7 victory.

Laviska Shenault hauled in 10 passes for 102 yards, but it was not enough for the struggling Colorado offense. The Buffaloes only had 12 first downs on the day.

Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew continues to make a name for himself as he threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Georgia continued its run on Saturday night as they cruised by Auburn, 27-10.

The Bulldogs piled up 303 rushing yards for the game. D’Andre Swift ran for 186 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Auburn’s offensive struggles continued as they were shut out in the second half.

Here are this week’s picks. I have to admit this is not the most attractive slate, but I am not going to let that stop me from trying to pick winners. Let’s get to it!

Michigan State Spartans @ Nebraska Cornhuskers | 11:00 AM CT | November 17 | Memorial Stadium

Line: Michigan State -2.5 | Total: 49

Don’t look now, but Nebraska has won three of their last four games. Freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez been a nice playmaker in Scott Frost’s debut season. Martinez has thrown for 2,212 yards while completing 66.9% of his passes.

The Nebraska defense is not the most impressive unit, giving up over 33 points per game. However, they are going up against a Michigan State team that has only scored 30 points in their previous two games.

The Spartans are unsettled at quarterback between Brian Lewerke and Rocky Lombardi. Both quarterbacks struggled against Ohio State. Lewerke went 11 of 28 for 128 yards, and Lombardi went 7 of 20 for 92 yards.

Scott Frost is rebuilding Nebraska, and I think his program is starting to take shape. I am going with Nebraska +2.5.

Utah Utes @ Colorado Buffaloes | 12:30 PM CT | November 17 | Folsom Field

Line: Utah -7 | Total: 48

Utah lost both starting quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss last week. Jason Shelley stepped in at quarterback, and Armand Shyne stepped in at running back, and the Utes took down Oregon, 32-25. Shelley threw for 262 yards and ran for 2 touchdowns. Shyne ran for 174 yards.

Utah is still playing for a Pac-12 Championship Game berth, while Colorado faces plenty of uncertainty. Rumors swirl around head coach Mike MacIntyre’s future with the program. Earlier this week it was being reported that MacIntyre would be fired.

I am going with Utah -7.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | 2:30 PM CT | November 17 | Bobby Dodd Stadium

Line: Georgia Tech -6 | Total: 53.5

We all know about Georgia Tech and the triple option. The Yellow Jackets are committed to running the ball, and they have done so effectively. Georgia Tech averages 362 yards per game on the ground while scoring nearly 38 points per game.

Virginia has a rush defense that gives up 136 yards per game. However, when they played Pittsburgh earlier this month, the Cavaliers gave up 254 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. I look for the Yellow Jackets to exploit that in a similar way.

Georgia Tech -6 is my pick.

Missouri Tigers @ Tennessee Volunteers | 2:30 PM CT | November 17 | Neyland Stadium

Line: Missouri -5.5 | Total: 57

Tennessee picked up its biggest win of the season last week as they took down Kentucky, 24-7. The Volunteers played great defense as they limited the Wildcats to 262 yards and forced 3 turnovers.

Missouri presents a bigger challenge on Saturday. The Tigers have great balance on offense, as I mentioned above. Missouri is averaging 473 yards per game, and I expect them to get it done on the ground and in the air this weekend.

I think Missouri gets rolling offensively and Tennessee, who averages 341 yards per game, will not have the firepower to keep up so I am going with Missouri -5.5.

Duke Blue Devils @ Clemson Tigers | 6:00 PM CT | November 17 | Memorial Stadium

Line: Clemson -28 | Total: 57.5

I think Duke is a solid team, but they are no match for Clemson, who is head and shoulders above anyone in the ACC.

Put simply, the Tigers are too big, too fast, and too strong for the Blue Devils.

I am going with Clemson -28 as they continue to roll.
