Week 7 College Football Picks

Season record: 15-17-1

Last week: 0-4 (Missouri -1.5, Oklahoma -7.5, Miami -13.5, Kentucky +5.5)

What a terrible, no good week.

Safe to say Clark-fade-o returned. Here is a look back at the awfulness.

Missouri led at halftime 23-14, then a monsoon rolled through Columbia, South Carolina. South Carolina went ahead 31-23 in a wild third quarter. Missouri would later reclaim the lead with a 57 yard field goal by Tucker McCann with 1:18 remaining. However, senior quarterback Michael Scarnecchia, filling in for the injured Jake Bentley, led South Carolina on a game-winning drive capped off by a Parker White field goal. South Carolina won the game, 37-35.

South Carolina came away victoriously despite being outgained 490-377 in yardage. Scarnecchia did a fine job filling in for Bentley, completing 20 of 35 passes for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns. Missouri quarterback Drew Lock had another rough outing as completed 17 of 36 passes with 2 interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Had I checked the weather, I never would have picked Missouri. If I know anything, it is to never bet against Will Muschamp in a rainstorm. Look at the picture above, Muschamp absolutely loves bad weather. Missouri’s mascot, however, does not.

I was expecting Oklahoma to come out victoriously in this shootout, and rather handily. However, that was not the case. Texas scored on its first four possessions of the game and went into halftime with a 24-17 lead. Texas’ lead would swell to 45-24 before Oklahoma had a furious comeback to tie the game 45-45. Freshman kicker Cameron Dicker connected on a 40 yard field goal to give Texas the 48-45 victory.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was stellar once again, throwing for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns, and rushing for 92 yards and a touchdown. However, he had two crucial turnovers.

The big story of the game was the defense, or lack of, from Oklahoma. Texas gained 501 total yards of offense and did not turn the ball over once. This led to the firing of Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops on Sunday evening.

Miami overcame a 27-7 deficit to defeat Florida State by a score of 28-27. Miami shut down Florida State offensively, but D.J. Matthews had a big day returning punts. Matthews had 5 returns for 145 yards including a 74 yard touchdown.

Miami quarterback threw 4 touchdown passes, but completed only 13 of 32 passes.

Kentucky went down in an overtime battle against Texas A&M. The Aggies defense was able to slow down Benny Snell, as he only rushed for 60 yards. The Kentucky offense never got going, only gaining eight first downs. However, their defense kept them in the game with a fourth quarter fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown.

In overtime, Kentucky did not give Snell a single touch. Their drive stalled and led to a missed field goal. Texas A&M took possession and gave the ball to running back Trayveon Williams three times, capped by a 10 yard touchdown run and victory.

Kentucky was getting 5.5 points and lost by 6. Ouch!

After an 0-4 week, the only way to go is up. Time to get rid of this Clark-fade-o stench.

Minnesota Golden Gophers @ Ohio State Buckeyes | 11:00 AM CT | October 13 | Ohio Stadium

Line: Ohio State -29.5 | Total: 59.5

OK, so obviously Ohio State is the better team is this game. However, it appears Ohio State coach Urban Meyer’s health has become an issue again. That is not good when your team is about to square of with PJ Fleck’s squad.

Minnesota +29.5 is the pick here. Row the boat!

Baylor Bears @ Texas Longhorns | 2:30 PM CT | October 13 | Royal Texas Memorial Stadium

Line: Texas -14 | Total: 60.5

Is Texas back? They just took down Oklahoma in a thrilling 48-45 win.  The Longhorns have now won five in a row. Now if I know Texas like I think I do, they are due for a clunker. I do not need stats to tell the story here.

I am fading the Longhorns after the big win, so Baylor +14.

Michigan State Spartans @ Penn State Nittany Lions | 2:30 PM CT | October 13 | Beaver Stadium

Line: Penn State -13.5 | Total: 53.5

Penn State comes into this game off of a bye week. Their last game was a disappointing loss at the hands of Ohio State.

Penn State has one of the top offenses in the country, averaging over 500 yards per game. Michigan State has the top rushing defense in the country, only giving up 34 yards per game on the ground. That will be tested by Penn State’s Miles Sanders who averages 108 rushing yards per game.

This is a revenge game for Penn State. Last year the Nittany Lions fell in East Lansing 27-24 in a game that included a three and a half hour delay.

Again, Penn State is coming off of a bye. Last year, after a bye week, the Nittany Lions dominated Michigan, 42-13.

Penn State -13.5 is the pick.

Georgia Bulldogs @ LSU Tigers | 2:30 PM CT | October 13 | LSU Tiger Stadium

Line: Georgia -7.5 | Total: 50.5

Once again, LSU is playing a ranked opponent. This week the Tigers host #2 Georgia. For the Bulldogs, this will be their second ranked opponent. In Week 2, Georgia throttled South Carolina 41-17.

Georgia has been dominant this season, outscoring opponents by nearly 30 points a game. Quarterback Jake Fromm has been stellar, completing 72.8% of his passes while throwing for 12 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. As a team, the Bulldogs average 6.0 yards per carry.

It is safe to say the LSU defense will have its hands full on Saturday. Last week against Florida, the Tigers surrendered 215 rushing yards. LSU will get a boost with the return of linebacker Jacob Phillips, who missed the Florida game due to injury.

LSU will also get a boost out of its home crowd. While CBS commentator and known doofus Gary Danielson does not think it will be a factor, you will see otherwise on Saturday.

Let the record show that Ed Orgeron is 5-0 following as head coach of LSU. Georgia is his biggest test to date.

Guess what?

Wisconsin Badgers @ Michigan Wolverines | 6:30 PM CT | October 13 | Michigan Stadium

Line: Michigan -9.5 | Total: 49

I think I am starting to buy into Michigan. Quarterback Shea Patterson has been far superior to any other quarterback that Jim Harbaugh has had in his time at Michigan. Patterson has completed 68.8% of his passes and 10 touchdowns thus far into the season.

The Michigan defense has been great. The Wolverines lead the country in total defense, allowing only 230 yards per game.

I am taking Michigan -9.5 as they avenge their 2017 loss to Wisconsin.

Tennessee Volunteers @ Auburn Tigers | 11:00 AM CT | October 13 | Jordan-Hare Stadium

Auburn suffered a frustrating loss in Starkville last Saturday. The Auburn offense never got going while the Auburn defense allowed Mississippi State to rush for 349 yards. While Auburn’s season is not going as planned, things are even worse for Tennessee.

The Volunteers have been outscored 85-33 in two SEC games against Florida and Georgia. It has been a rough go for Jeremy Pruitt in his first year at Tennessee, and I look for that to continue.

Gus Malzahn will get Auburn’s offensive issues figured out, and Saturday is a great opportunity.

I am going with Auburn -15.5.
