SEC Hot Seats Week 9

It’s late October and temperatures are dropping in most places, but that is not in the case in Fayetteville and Knoxville. Arkansas and Tennessee are typically competitive football teams, however, in 2017 they have reached levels of incompetence rivaled only by ESPN. These programs, much like ESPN, leave you asking, “What are they doing?”

Without further ado, let’s discuss the SEC’s most embattled coaches.

It’s no surprise Butch Jones and Tennessee weren’t able to win on the road at Alabama, but they didn’t even cover the massive thirty-six point spread. The Volunteers were thumped 45-7 and outgained 604 to 108 in yards. Tennessee’s only touchdown came on an interception return. Their offense has not scored a touchdown since September 23 against UMass.

Butch Jones is still the head coach at Tennessee, somehow. Tennessee now goes on the road to Kentucky as a 5.5 point underdog to a team who just got drilled by Mississippi State.

Again, Tennessee fans have had enough.

It was another blowout loss for Bret Bielema and Arkansas.

After giving up 48 to South Carolina and 41 to Alabama, Auburn put up 52 against Arkansas last Saturday. Their opponents’ scores are quickly approaching Bielema’s waist size.

The Arkansas defense has struggled mightily this season. Saturday night was more of the same as they gave up a whopping 629 yards to Auburn. Things were especially difficult when they lined up with only nine men.

Yes, Auburn scored a touchdown on that play.

The Razorbacks will go for their first SEC win on Saturday against Ole Miss. Ole Miss, like Arkansas, has one of the worst defenses in the league. They will also start backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu. Despite this, the Rebels are still 3.5 point favorites.

Things are looking up for the rest of the coaches who have made previous appearances on Hot Seats. Barry Odom and Missouri took out their frustration on an outclassed Idaho team. Gus Malzahn and Auburn took care of the aforementioned Arkansas squad. Ed Orgeron and LSU have now won three in a row as they head into a bye week before their showdown with Alabama. Kevin Sumlin, Derek Mason, and Jim McElwain all had the week off.

SEC Hot Seats will return next week, but Butch Jones and Bret Bielema may not.
