SEC Hot Seats Week 3

After two weeks of SEC Football, let’s take another look at the Hot Seats across the league.

Gus Malzahn, Auburn

Gus Malzahn makes his debut for 2017. Malzahn managed to guide Auburn to the Sugar Bowl in 2016 and virtually escaped the hot seat. A year later, he finds himself back on it. The Auburn offense never really got going Saturday night at Clemson. Heralded transfer Jarrett Stidham was ineffective, throwing for only seventy-nine yards and getting sacked eleven times. The ground game was not any better as the Tigers/War Eagles averaged less than one yard a carry. Auburn lost the game 14-6 and new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey will look to turn things around against weaker competition in upcoming opponents Mercer and Missouri. If not, look for Malzahn to take over play calling duties.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M

The racist letter written to Kevin Sumlin was completely out of bounds. Any fan who would do such a thing is a complete embarrassment to his or her university. That said, Nicholls State is not a team that any SEC team should struggle against. Sumlin found himself in that situation Saturday night when his team was tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter, eventually escaping with a 24-14 victory. Hopefully the Aggies can find their offense as they welcome UL-Lafayette who is giving up 57 points per game, good for last in the NCAA FBS.

Bret Bielema, Arkansas

Bielema and his Razorbacks found themselves behind a woodshed Saturday afternoon courtesy of the TCU Horned Frogs. Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen had a forgettable day completing only nine of twenty-three passes and the Arkansas defense gave up four rushing touchdowns. The Razorbacks are off this weekend before a showdown with Texas A&M where both coaches could be coaching for their jobs.

Butch Jones, Tennessee

Tennessee defeated Indiana State 42-7 which does not tell us anything other than Indiana State does not run the triple option. Butch Jones leads Tennessee into Gainesville, and thankfully they are able to play after Hurricane Irma. The Volunteers beat Florida last year for the first time since 2004. A win here would put Tennessee in good shape to capture an ever elusive SEC East Championship and finally get the monkey off Jones’ back.

Shoutout to Kirby Smart and the Georgia fans at Notre Dame

Georgia went on the road to Notre Dame and won with true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm making his first career start. The Bulldogs overcame four deficits in the game to come away with a 20-19 win. While Georgia edged out Notre Dame on the scoreboard, they may have even done so in the stands. Check out the sea of red and black inside of Notre Dame Stadium below.
