We are amidst an exciting NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, the buzz is not quite what it should be despite the teams being tied at two games a piece. Everyone seems to have their opinions as to why. Indiana and Oklahoma City represent two of the league’s smaller markets, so that may have something to do with it. Sportswriter Political talk show host Clay Travis insists it is because of the league’s wokeness.
I have watched most of the NBA Playoffs and have not noticed the “wokeness” that Travis speaks of. Ryen Russillo, well-known MAGA guy, watches the NBA harder than anyone and he has not, either.
The NBA Playoffs have been terrific and both the Pacers and Thunder play a rather fun style of basketball. Thunder star Shai-Gilgeous Alexander may flop quite a bit, but that has not stopped millions of people from watching soccer, has it?
Now, when it comes to the NBA Finals, there is one glaring issue. That is the network providing its coverage, ESPN and ABC.
The crew that is calling the Finals lacks a big game presence. Mike Breen is a fantastic play-by-play announcer, but his teammates in the booth do not bring much to the broadcast. Richard Jefferson is rather milquetoast in his commentary, but also makes comments that come off goofy and awkward. One notable instance was his criticism of Indiana point guard Tyrese Haliburton having off nights.
Then there is Doris Burke, who I am sure is a nice lady. That is all I have to say here.
There is also the NBA Countdown crew which features Stephen A. Smith, who is apparently everywhere now, and Kendrick Perkins. Both of whom believe they are far greater than they really are. Whether it is Smith having delusions about being the U.S. President or Perkins exaggerating the player he was in the NBA, neither offers much in the way of analysis or insight.

These Pacers fans sitting courtside showed their disdain for Perkins and Smith in humorous fashion.
As if it could not get worse for Smith, he was “caught in 4K” tuning out of the game and opting to play Solitaire on his phone.
Smith actually responded to this picture of himself and it did not go well. A community note was slapped on his post, stating that this photo was taken during game action.
