Do Not Underestimate the Genius of Jim Harbaugh

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh moves to the beat of his own drum. To say the former Michigan head man is quirky is putting it lightly. From sleeping at a recruit’s home to bringing his own glove to baseball games, which he watched from the stands, Harbaugh is an unusual character. He even had a garage sale at his former Michigan home.

However, you cannot overlook Harbaugh’s results. Most recently, he led the Michigan Wolverines to their first football national championship since 1997. Harbaugh, once again, did it his way. As college football as a whole moves towards pass-happy offenses, Michigan won with its rushing attack.

Considering Michigan’s offense was so run-heavy, the pre-draft buzz around quarterback JJ McCarthy has raised eyebrows. Critics point out that McCarthy did not put up the numbers like those of other top quarterback prospects like Jayden Daniels or Caleb Williams.

McCarthy has, nevertheless, gained support from NFL teams, who view him as a first round pick. His biggest supporter? None other than the man who coached him in college, Jim Harbaugh.

It is not unusual for coaches to beam about their former players as they head to the next level, but this is different since Harbaugh has joined the professional ranks.

Harbaugh’s current team currently holds the fifth overall pick in next month’s draft and some have even begun to wonder if the Chargers will select McCarthy. That seems crazy considering they already have one of the top quarterbacks in the league in Justin Herbert.

The Chargers taking McCarthy is still a long shot. However, McCarthy’s draft odds continue to surge.

Not only did Harbaugh get a chance to praise his former quarterback, but he got to increase the value of his pick in doing so. Seems like a real win-win situation for the eccentric Chargers coach. Given his recent garage sale, he appears well-versed in the art of bartering.
