Top Five Los Angeles Rappers

Super Bowl week is upon us and thus it is time to crown the top five rappers from the host city.

2019: Atlanta

2020: Miami

2021: Tampa Bay

For the second straight year, one of the Super Bowl participants will be playing in their home stadium. The Los Angeles Rams will play Super Bowl LVI in SoFi Stadium after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played Super Bowl LV in their home, Raymond James Stadium.

Last year, Tampa Bay failed to provide a wealth of famous rappers. That will not be an issue with Los Angeles this year. In fact, it was difficult to narrow it down to five. That is why I enlisted the help of others. Shout out to Floyd Johns for helping to curate this list. Floyd also calls LA home these days, so I really value his opinion.

Without further ado, here are my top five rappers from Los Angeles.

5. Nipsey Hussle

Nipsey Hussle checks in at #5. His single “Grindin’ All My Life” embodies his spirit as an artist and entrepreneur. Nipsey made his mark as an independent artist and later found fame in collaborations with the biggest stars in hip hop.

While Nipsey was unfortunately killed in 2019, his impact and music still lives on.

4. Ice Cube

While Ice Cube has spent that past decade making movies, he spent the previous two making his mark in the rap game. Ice Cube gained fame with the group N.W.A. alongside Arabian Prince, Eazy-E, MC Ren, DJ Yella, and Dr. Dre. He and the group would have a falling out which led to countless beefs before reuniting in 1999.

Ice Cube’s hit song “It Was A Good Day” is an all-time vibe and securely locks up the fourth spot.

3. Kendrick Lamar

While compiling this list, it was apparent that there is not a consensus opinion when it comes to Kendrick Lamar. Some love him, and to my surprise, some do not. I had to make the executive decision to include Mr. Lamar.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was a masterpiece in my humble opinion. Lamar followed it up with To Pimp a Butterfly and Damn, both of which went Platinum.

2. Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg has done it all. From popularizing “Gin & Juice” to befriending Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg has become one of the preeminent faces of rap. He has transcended decades while keeping true to his own style of rap. This was evidenced by his 2011 collaboration with fellow cannabis fiend Wiz Khalifa.

“Young, Wild, and Free” spent weeks atop the charts and even was nominated for a Grammy in 2013. While Snoop has collaborated with many artists throughout his career, it is Dr. Dre who has teamed up with him most. We will get to see the pair perform together again at halftime of Super Bowl LVI.

1. Tupac

Tupac takes the top spot despite not beginning his career there. He has the rare distinction of being both a New York and Los Angeles rapper. The LA influence is evidenced in hits like “California Love” and “To Live And Die in LA”.
