LSU will complete their 2020 season tomorrow night in the TaxAct Texas Bowl against Kansas State. It was a disappointing season for the Tigers, but they defeated Texas A&M for their sixth win to gain bowl eligibility. However, as you know by now, they will be shorthanded for this game.
Freshman Garrett Nussmeier is listed as the starter at quarterback, however, we may see a different player under center inside NRG Stadium. That player is wide receiver Jontre Kirklin.

Kirklin has played mostly receiver during his time at LSU, but he has done a little bit of everything. Nothing epitomized this more than when he stepped in to play snaps at cornerback in the 2018 Fiesta Bowl.

For his career, Kirklin has rather pedestrian receiving numbers: 20 receptions for 313 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, it would be unfair to reduce Kirklin’s contributions to stats alone. With starting quarterback Max Johnson on his way out and Nussmeier’s redshirt situation unclear, the Texas Bowl provides a great opportunity to cap off his career as a Tiger.
Now what could Kirklin playing quarterback look like? He last played the position at Lutcher High where he threw for 7,500 yards and ran for 3,000 yards, courtesy of LSUSports.net. Kirklin also briefly played wildcat quarterback against Rice in 2018.

That was his only carry as he finished the game with one rush for four yards. But check out Kirklin toting the rock at Lutcher High.
With the situation at hand, hopefully the LSU coaching staff has looked at what Ole Miss did with John Rhys Plumlee against LSU in 2019.
No disrespect to Kansas State, but I don’t think they have the caliber of players that LSU did on that night. I would bet Kirklin will be faster than all eleven defenders they put on the field.
Houston is a city that loves trains…

And it is time to hop on the Jontre Kirklin hype train!
