SEC Hot Seats Week 10

Welcome to November!

Surprisingly, Jim McElwain was the first SEC coach fired. We will discuss that along with where some of the other SEC coaches stand.

Jim McElwain was fired Sunday after his team’s 42-7 loss to Georgia. This was Florida’s third loss in a row and the offensive struggles continued as the Gators only amassed 249 yards of offense. After reaching the SEC Championship in his first two years, it was apparent his team would not vie for a third straight SEC East crown.

There may have been other things at play here. McElwain brought up death threats which took on a life of their own. It caused a lot of confusion among Florida fans and administration alike. Did McElwain lie about the whole thing?

Reminds me of another situation McElwain lied about…

Regardless, McElwain got what he deserved.

Another week, another Tennessee loss, yet somehow Butch Jones is still employed.

The good news is that Tennessee found the endzone twice in their 29-26 loss at Kentucky. The Volunteers gained 445 yards of offense which was their highest in SEC play this season.

In the loss, starting offensive tackle Brett Kendrick played with a concussion in the second half. Jones said he did not know of Kendrick’s concussion during the game. This scenario adds another layer of criticism towards Jones.

Tennessee hosts Southern Miss this weekend, but don’t look for the bleachers to be full during the game. Fans want to make their displeasure with Butch Jones known and have even started an #EmptyNeyland hashtag.

NCAA Football: Arkansas at Texas Christian

Bret Bielema and Arkansas got their first SEC win of the year in a 38-37 comeback victory over Ole Miss. The Hogs fell behind 31-7 in the first half and trailed throughout the whole game until kicking a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. Credit goes to Bielema and company for putting together a gritty performance. Time will tell what this performance means going forward with a game at LSU still looming.

After battling irrelevancy and a five game losing streak, things are starting to look up for Barry Odom and Missouri. Missouri has played two weak out of conference opponents in Idaho and UConn, but they have been dominant in both games. The Tigers have won both games by at least forty points and quarterback Drew Lock has thrown for eleven touchdowns in the two games.

Missouri has a good chance of picking up its first SEC win this weekend as they play host to Florida who has lost three in a row and will be under an interim coach. After that, every team left on their schedule has a losing record.

The heat is back on Kevin Sumlin after Texas A&M’s 35-14 loss to Mississippi State. The Aggies were never able to keep pace as the Bulldogs raced to a 14-0 first half lead and never looked back. The offense struggled only gaining 285 yards. Both Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel struggled at quarterback.

Sumlin is now 10-18 in SEC play in the months of October and November going back to 2013. It won’t get any easier as #15 ranked Auburn comes into Kyle Field.

Vanderbilt fell short in their 34-27 loss at South Carolina which drops them to 0-5 in SEC play. It’s tough to suggest criticism of Derek Mason after his team’s effort in the second half last Saturday.

However, his 5-24 career record is another story. Mason will have to continue to improve down the stretch to ensure job security.
