We are almost a month into a new college football season and things are heating up on the hot seat front. This week will feature the usual suspects once again, so let’s start with the gift that keeps on giving, Butch Jones.
The Tennessee and Florida was one of the ugliest displays of football we will see in 2017. Tennessee made a fourth quarter comeback only to give up a Hail Mary in the final seconds. Again, Butch Jones finds a way to lose a game. This has become an all top familiar scene in Knoxville as the Volunteers have lose five of their last seven SEC games. Also, Jones is now 1-4 against Florida.
It appears the Tennessee fans are fed up.
Texas A&M went to the locker room trailing UL-Lafayette 21-14 on Saturday. It looked as though Kevin Sumlin could be coaching his last game, however, his team responded with a dominant second half. The Aggies went on to win 45-21.
Will this momentum carry over as Texas A&M takes on Arkansas this Saturday? Both coaches desperately need a win.
As mentioned, Bret Bielema cannot afford to lose against Texas A&M. Arkansas is still reeling from their 28-7 loss against TCU where nothing went right. Another loss to Texas A&M could send the Razorbacks into a tailspin and Bielema into unemployment.
2017 continues to be a tough year for Gus Malzahn. Auburn racked up 510 yards of offense and the defense continued its impressive play, but only beat Merced 24-10. This is because the Tigers turned the ball over five teams. It will be interesting to see if this continues to be an issue going forward.
Another distraction for Auburn came when backup quarterback Sean White was kicked off the team earlier this week following a suspension and arrest. White started ten games last year. True freshman Malik Willis becomes the new backup quarterback after White’s dismissal.
Shoutout to Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs
Mississippi State opened SEC play with a 37-7 victory over LSU Saturday night. This was their largest margin of victory over LSU in series history. Mullen displayed a great game plan as his offense went through, around, and over the LSU defense. The Bulldogs’ complete performance earned Mullen National Coach of the Week and quarterback Nick Fitzgerald SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Mississippi State moved into the Top 25 at #17. It could be argued that Mississippi State should be ranked higher, and they will have a chance to prove it as they head to Athens to take on the #11 ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
