College football is back and the SEC turned in a 12-2 record on the weekend. It very well should have been 13-1, but things went off the rails for Texas A&M as they blew up a 34 point second half lead. So let’s start there.
1. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M
Things were looking very positive for Sumlin and the Aggies as they raced to a 38-10 halftime lead at UCLA. The lead eventually grew to 44-10 before UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen got hot and led the Bruins back for a comeback for the ages.
Many things went wrong for Texas A&M as they opened the year 0-1. Starting QB Nick Starkel will miss a significant amount of time after being knocked out of the game due to injury. Starkel was replaced by Kellen Mond, who was ineffective and completed only three of seventeen passes.
Sumlin will need to use the next two weeks against Louisiana lightweights Nicholls State and UL-Lafayette to right the ship before taking on conference foe Arkansas and fellow hot seat occupant Bret Bielema.
2. Bret Bielema, Arkansas
Arkansas put together a dominant effort in their 49-7 victory over Florida A&M. The Razorback defense appears to have improved as they only allowed 175 yards of offense. This weekend presents a bigger task as they host TCU.
3.Butch Jones, Tennessee
Butch Jones escaped Week 1 with a victory, somehow. The Vols gave up over 500 rushing yards, but took advantage of two Georgia Tech turnovers. This game gave us everything: good, bad, and a trash can. Having a trash can on the sideline is pretty ironic for a coach who could very well be canned.
Shoutout to South Carolina coach Will Muschamp
South Carolina had one of the bigger Week 1 victories defeating North Carolina State 35-28 in Charlotte. Muschamp has done a remarkable job since taking over at South Carolina. Just getting to a bowl game last year was impressive and is off to a strong start in 2017. Also impressive was the way he called out the nerds at CoachComm in the process.
Stay cool and come back for Week 3!
