Coach O Shuts Out Media for Fall Camp

LSU players have yet to report to camp, but we already have our first story line. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has elected to not give media access during fall camp practices. Media members are typically allowed to observe and film a brief period of football practices.

This comes at a bit of a surprise as Orgeron allowed extended media availability at practices last fall as interim head coach. During that time, the media covered practices with more energy and enthusiasm. That kind of buzz helped Orgeron ultimately secure the head coaching position.

That said, there are a number of factors that may have led to this decision from Orgeron. While Danny Etling is the incumbent starter at quarterback, the position appears unsettled heading into camp. Etling is coming off of back surgery and newcomers Myles Brennan and Lowell Narcisse figure to challenge for that spot. In his first season as head coach, the last thing Orgeron needs is a quarterback controversy.

Another factor is the status and health of Arden Key. Key was a standout defender in the 2016 defense which featured multiple NFL Draft picks. Key had a whopping 12 sacks in only 11 games last year. While on the field, he spent most of his time in the opponents’ backfield. However, Key is coming off shoulder surgery and a personal leave which caused him to miss all of spring practice. Perhaps Orgeron would like to let this situation play out without media around.

LSU also will feature a much different under new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. LSU’s offense will feature a variety of formations, shifts, motions, etc. which is a radical shift from the previous regime. Media rarely gets a good look at these types of things during practices, but you can never be too sure.

The media will have to wait to see the Tigers in action like the rest of us on September 2 when they take on the BYU Cougars at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
