SEC Hot Seat Regular Season Roundup

As a whole, 2016 was a disappointing season for the Southeastern Conference. Many teams did not meet preseason expectations. Les Miles was the only coach to lose his job during the season, but more end the season with lots of uncertainty.

Let’s start with a coach who entered the season on the hot seat.

Kevin Sumlin was looking to get his team into the College Football Playoff less than a month ago. That was before Texas A&M lost three of its last four with the only win being a less than impressive win over in-state UT San Antonio. With the tumble, the Aggies finished fourth in the SEC West. It will be the third year in a row Texas A&M has finished fourth or worse in the division. As the seventh highest paid coach in the country, Sumlin is certainly underperfoming.

Bret Bielema finds himself back on the hot seat after a rough 2016, which is a good time to remind you that his career SEC record is a measly 10-22. If we are talking in baseball terms here, is Bert even hitting his weight? Losing to Missouri is never good, especially for a fanbase with an affinity for trophies shaped like states.

Not only did Tennessee not make it to Atlanta, but they also lost to Vanderbilt. While 8-4 is not a terrible record, you have to ask yourself has Butch Jones peaked? In a year when Tennessee went into the season as the overwhelming favorite, Jones and his team fell a game short. While the Tennessee seniors will be able to claim their life championship, they will not be able to claim a SEC Championship.

I am not sure this will earn Jones an extension, however.

Major kudos to Mark Stoops for doing something I did not think was possible this year; he got Kentucky bowl eligible. After a 1-2 start, many, including myself, thought there was no way Kentucky would make the postseason. The Wildcats won five out of its last seven and will go bowling for the first time under Stoops.

Give this man an extension!

That concludes 2016 SEC Hot Seats. Viva Coach O!
